Days 8 & 9 – Wawa to Thunder Bay… and a layover

Superior vista

The morning brought signs that another wave of wet weather was on the way. After some breakfast, we pointed our bikes to the west and started toward Thunder Bay, 300 miles away.

Of the 300 miles, about 250 of it was through steady rain. We again passed on many photo opportunities because conditions were so bad. Only one photo for the day. It really doesn’t even begin to express the absolute raw beauty of the area. You just have to go there and experience it for yourself.

We ended our run at the Victoria Inn, in Thunder Bay at about 6:00. It is a nice hotel near a fairly busy regional airport. The hotel serves as a conference center and has all of the amenities you would expect, and some that you wouldn’t. Included is a large indoor pool area with a HUGE waterslide. It’s fun to watch the kids enjoying themselves from the restaurant adjacent to the pool.

Thunder Bay is a medium size town with an industrial flavor, with roots in shipping, rail transport and the logging industries. Much earlier, the area was established by the fur trade. Today it is a regional services center for Northwest Ontario and has two respected colleges/universities.

After the obligatory evening cigar, we retired, hoping that the weather might be a little more accommodating the next day.

It wasn’t.

Today we woke to more rain and falling temperatures. As I write this, it is 7:00 pm and 49 degrees and falling. The wind is howling and, although the rain has all but stopped, the skies are gray. It didn’t take any special encouragement for either one of us to decide this morning that we will wait until tomorrow to resume our adventure.

The down time has been put to reasonably good use. Laundry needed washing, naps were taken, blogging brought up to date. We’ve met some interesting folks here as well. The weatherman is calling for clear skies tomorrow, albeit with low temps, so we will head for Duluth tomorrow morning.
